Norfluoxetine is a tricyclic antidepressant drug of the phenylpiperidine class. Norfluoxetine is structurally similar to fluoxetine and binds to the serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby inhibiting its reuptake, which results in an increase in extracellular serotonin levels. Norfluoxetine has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential, which can lead to cell death. The analytical method for norfluoxetine is based on gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD). Norfluoxetine has been found in human serum and wastewater samples at concentrations that are lower than those found in surface water and soil. The matrix effect may be responsible for these low concentrations. Norfluoxetine has been shown to act as a 5-HT receptor antagonist as well as an inhibitor of dopamine uptake.
