p-Nicorandil is a white crystalline solid with a molecular weight of 174.2 g/mol, and a melting point of 175 °C. It is soluble in water and ethanol. p-Nicorandil has an active substance group that inhibits the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which causes the accumulation of bicarbonate ions in the body. This can lead to hyperchloremia, which can cause damage to the kidneys or heart. p-Nicorandil also has antihistaminergic activity and can be used as a substitute for diphenhydramine (Benadryl).
p-Nicorandil is also an oxidant that acts as a ligand for metal ions such as nickel and platinum, which are important for their carcinogenic properties. It has been shown to have potential antitumor activity in cisplatin-resistant cells through its ability to bind to cisplatin and inhibit its uptake into cancer cells.
