Nicotine is a chemical stimulant and addictive drug. It is most commonly used as a recreational drug for its mood-altering effects. It can also be used to help with the withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking. In vivo, nicotine has been shown to have an effect on locomotor activity in CD-1 mice. The locomotor activity was increased by administration of 0.6mg/kg of nicotine and decreased by administration of 1.2mg/kg of nicotine. Nicotine also stimulates the release of acetylcholine in the brain, which may contribute to its mood-altering effects. Nicotine ditartrate dihydrate (NDD) is a form of nicotine that is more readily absorbed into the bloodstream than other forms, such as nicotine citrate or nicotine tartrate monohydrate. NDD has been shown to bind to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in vivo, and this binding can be blocked by drugs that are known antagonists at these receptors, such as mecamy
