- Nifurtimox
Nifurtimox is a drug used to treat African trypanosomiasis, a disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. This drug inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to polymerase chain reaction products. Nifurtimox also has anti-mitochondrial effects and can induce apoptosis in human HL-60 cancer cells. When nifurtimox is combined with temozolomide, an alkylating agent that disrupts DNA repair, cell death occurs more rapidly. The combination of these two drugs has been shown to be effective in treating certain types of cancers.
