2-Nitro-5-fluorobenzoic acid, methyl ester is a compound that is used as a starting material for the synthesis of other compounds. It can be synthesized from methyl alcohol and nitrous acid. The resulting product is obtained by reacting with phosphorus pentoxide in a phosphotungstic acid solution at 0°C to produce a cyclic anhydride. This reaction is catalyzed by transfer catalyst, which promotes the formation of an anhydride ring. This product reacts with methyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide to form a methyl ester, which can then be reacted with phosphotungstic acid to yield 2-nitro-5-fluorobenzoic acid, phosphonate.
