3-Nitrofluorene is an organic solution that has been shown to have carcinogenic properties. It is a metabolite of 2-nitrofluorene and reacts with DNA to form adducts that are mutagenic. 3-Nitrofluorene can be detected in urine by the hydroxamic acid oxidation method, which is based on the reaction of nitroaromatic compounds with hydroxamic acids. This reaction produces diazonium ions, which react with triphenylphosphine and hydrochloric acid to produce phosphorescent products that are measured at 540 nm. The analytical method for this compound involves catalytic reduction in the presence of hydrogen gas and palladium as a catalyst. The reaction products are analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
