4-Nitrophenylacetylene is a chemical compound that has two phenyl groups and a carbonyl group. It is used in wastewater treatment and polymer film production. 4-Nitrophenylacetylene forms a stable nitro group, which can be removed by oxidation or reduction to form the corresponding amine or alcohol. The nitro group is also useful for identifying the molecule in the nmr spectra because it absorbs at high frequencies. X-ray absorption data show that the molecule has some aromatic character, with electron density on the ring atoms as well as on the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom. In addition, 4-nitrophenylacetylene is an efficient polymerization agent when exposed to ultraviolet light, forming a polymer film by chain reactions. The transfer mechanism for this reaction is not yet known but may involve functional groups such as hydrogen bonding or pi stacking.
