N-Nitroso-di-n-hexylamine is a carcinogenic compound that is found in some toiletries and food. It has been shown to be present in human adipose tissue and has been identified as a possible bladder carcinogen. N-Nitrosodihydroxyhexylamine is metabolized to nitrite ion, which reacts with dibutylamine (a component of some toiletries) to form nitrosamines. These nitrosamines can react with other molecules such as amines found in the environment or food to create nitrosamine adducts, which are known human carcinogens. The presence of cationic surfactants like quaternary ammonium compounds can enhance this reaction by forming metal complexes that react with these adducts, leading to their increased uptake. This process may also occur in the esophagus, where it can lead to cell proliferation and cancerous lesions.
