This compound reacts with sodium borohydride in the presence of water to form sodium 8-nitroquinolineborohydride and hydrogen gas. The optimum temperature for this reaction is 175°C and the optimum time is 5 hours. The debromination of 8-nitro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline will produce 1,8-dibromo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline.
