4-(4-Nitrophenylazo)resorcinol (NPAR) is a fluorescent dye that has been used to study the matrix effect of sodium salts. It is also used as a signal pathway marker for intracellular calcium ion levels, and to measure the pH of caproic acid. NPAR has been shown to be an acidic compound with a pK value of 4.5 in solid form and 5.5 in solution, based on its structural properties. NPAR has been shown to be an effective catalyst for hydrogen fluoride synthesis at elevated temperatures, and can be used as a fluorescent probe for brain functions. NPAR can also cause neuronal death at high concentrations, which may be due to its cationic surfactant properties.
