Nickel sulfide is a compound that can be used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be effective at removing iron oxides, sulfides, and heavy metals from wastewaters. Nickel sulfide is chemically stable in neutral pH and does not react with water or oxygen. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient, which means it does not expand or contract much with changes in temperature. This property makes nickel sulfide useful for filtering out particles from wastewater because the filter will not clog as easily. Nickel sulfide can be prepared by mixing sodium citrate and hydrochloric acid to precipitate the compound from solution. The compound can also be prepared by plasma mass spectrometry (PMAS). PMAS involves passing an ionized gas through a sample, which causes the gas to become charged. The charged gas then reacts with other molecules present in the sample and produces ions of different masses that are detected by the mass spectrometer.
