4-Nitrobenzoylacetic acid ethyl ester is a potent inhibitor of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It binds to the dimer interface of HIV reverse transcriptase, inhibiting its nucleophilic attack on the backbone of DNA. This binding inhibits the enzymatic process of converting RNA to DNA, preventing viral replication. 4-Nitrobenzoylacetic acid ethyl ester has been shown to inhibit cell growth in culture and is an effective inhibitor against many different types of viruses.
