Nonanoic anhydride is a crystalline cellulose derivative that is synthesized by the asymmetric synthesis of fatty acids. It has been used in the preparation of ionic nonwovens, which are used in the automotive industry to improve thermal expansion and optical properties. Nonanoic anhydride reacts with acyl halides to produce molecules with a high degree of unsaturation, which have been shown to act as receptors on cell membranes for fatty acid chains. This product can be recycled and is enzymatically prepared.
