4-Nitrophenol phenyl sulphide is a model complex that has been shown to be able to cross-couple with dimethylformamide. The model complexes are used as catalysts in the synthesis of organic molecules. Dimethylformamide is an organic solvent that reacts with the nitro group in 4-nitrophenol phenyl sulphide, forming a sulfonium ion. This ion can then react with aminophenols and disulfides to form new compounds. The reaction can also be reversed by adding acid or base. 4-Nitrophenol phenyl sulphide is not active against bacteria by itself, but it has been shown to have anti-bacterial properties when coupled with other compounds such as citratus or aminophenyl.
