2-(4-Nitrophenyl)butyric acid is a butyric acid derivative that has been synthesized in the laboratory. It has antiplatelet properties and can be used as a research probe to identify nitro groups in transition metal complexes. 2-(4-Nitrophenyl)butyric acid is synthesised by reacting 4-nitrophenol with sodium bicarbonate, followed by hydrolysis of the resultant sodium phenolate. The product can be detected by microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopic methods. This chemical reacts reversibly with light at wavelengths between 400 and 500 nm, causing it to change from yellow to red or vice versa.
