Description:

Nabam is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of redox agents. It is a crystalline polymorph that has been shown to have bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Nabam is active against bacterial strains with a broad range of susceptibility to other antimicrobial agents, such as ampicillin, cefotaxime, nalidixic acid, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. Analysis of the crystal structure shows that it binds to the bacterial ribosome by binding in the A site and interferes with protein synthesis by preventing amino acid uptake or incorporation into proteins. The synergistic effect of nabam may be due to its ability to bind strongly to both the bacterial ribosome and the cytoplasmic membrane in stationary cells. Nabam can be detected at concentrations as low as 1 µg/mL in water samples
