4-Nitro-1-indanone is a lead compound that inhibits the cysteine protease thioredoxin reductase. It also interacts with cardiac potassium channels and shows cytotoxicity to human erythrocytes. The inhibition of thioredoxin reductase leads to an increase in hydrogen peroxide, which may activate the mitochondrial pathway and induce cell death through apoptosis. The molecular docking studies show that 4-Nitro-1-indanone binds to the channel's outer vestibule, affecting its function. 4-Nitro-1-indanone has been found to have antiarrhythmic properties in a rat model of atrial fibrillation.
