- Quinoline, 7-Nitro-
7-Nitroquinoline is a nitro compound that is used as an antibacterial agent. It is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with a molecular weight of 120.1 g/mol and a boiling point of 149°C at 760 mmHg pressure. 7-Nitroquinoline has been shown to be active against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, and Listeria monocytogenes. The mechanism for the antibacterial activity of 7-nitroquinoline may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of DNA by binding to the enzyme DNA polymerase. 7-Nitroquinoline can be synthesized from 5-nitroquinoline (6NQ) by reacting it with acetonitrile in the presence of chromatographic reagents such as dipole and argon.
