N-Phenyl-rhodanine is a drug substance that belongs to the group of antibacterial drugs. It is an oxindole derivative that reacts with nucleophiles and undergoes a condensation reaction to form new compounds. N-Phenyl-rhodanine has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, but does not have any effect on gram-negative bacteria. This compound also has selective activity against aerobic pathogens, such as Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. N-Phenyl-rhodanine inhibits bacterial growth by reacting with nucleophilic sites on cell membranes or enzymes in the ribosome. The addition of aldehydes or benzothiazolium groups improves the selectivity of this compound for aerobic pathogens over anaerobic ones.
