Z-L-norleucine is an amino acid that is synthesized by the stepwise conversion of l-glutamic acid to 2-amino-4-oxobutanoic acid. It is a precursor for the synthesis of γ-aminobutyric acid, which is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Z-L-norleucine also has cytosolic phospholipase A2 and peptidase activities in tissues such as rat brain and pancreatic tissue. The functionalities of this amino acid are labile, so it must be stored at low temperatures.
