Nd-Z-L-ornithine is a metal chelator that can be used for the removal of heavy metals from water. It has an affinity for metal ions, such as copper and zinc, and has been shown to adsorb these ions at high concentrations. The adsorption equilibrium depends on the pH of the solution and the concentration of acid complex. Nd-Z-L-ornithine is insoluble in water and can be removed by desorption with distilled water or dilute hydrochloric acid. This compound also has antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and marine ecosystems. It can be used as a reagent in microbial assays, such as the determination of sulfide production.
