L-Ornithine is an amino acid that is used as a building block for proteins and has a number of other important functions as well. Ornithine is also a substrate for the synthesis of polyamines, which are essential for cell proliferation. It can be converted to citrulline by arginase and then to urea by ornithine transcarbamylase. L-Ornithine can be synthesized from glutamate or from the reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide with bicarbonate catalyzed by carbamoyl phosphate synthetase. This reaction is reversible and proceeds in the presence of ATP, Mg2+ ions, and chloride ions. The enzyme ornithine aminotransferase converts ornithine into putrescine, an intermediate in the synthesis of polyamines.
