Nd-Boc-D-ornithine is a synthetic, naturally occurring amino acid that is used in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting protein synthesis. This action prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Nd-Boc-D-ornithine also has strong antibacterial activity against drug resistant pathogens such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
