1-Naphthalenemethanol (1NM) is a potent antibacterial agent that has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The mechanism of action for 1NM is not well understood, but it may involve formation of reactive oxygen species or hydrogen bonds between 1NM and the bacterial cell membrane. 1NM is able to bind to the naphthalene molecule, which can be used as an electron acceptor in the reaction mechanism. It has been found that 1NM reacts with a hydroxyl group on the aromatic ring of naphthalene and the multi-walled carbon ring in multi-walled carbon nanotubes. This reaction leads to a decrease in the number of double bonds in the aromatic ring, which could lead to an increase in reactivity with other molecules.
