5-Nitro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (5NTI) is a nitroreductase inhibitor that is synthesized from 5-nitrosalicylic acid and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline. It has been shown to inhibit the enzyme quinone oxidoreductase in E. coli and human cells by binding to the heme cofactor of this enzyme. 5NTI inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the synthesis of quinones that are required for electron transport. This drug can be biodegraded by reductive hydrolysis with hydrogen peroxide or by microorganisms such as Pseudomonas putida.
