3-Nitro-L-tyrosine ethyl ester hydrochloride is a fluorogenic substrate that can be used in the assay of ceramide synthase. It has been shown to be a natural substrate and is also a fluorometric, chromogenic, and photometric substrate. 3-Nitro-L-tyrosine ethyl ester hydrochloride can react with sulfate groups on glycosaminoglycans to produce fluorescent products, which are measured spectrophotometrically at 480 nm. This compound can also be used as an aglycon in fatty acid synthesis or as a 4-methylumbelliferyl glycoside.
