- (2-Nitrophenyl)pyruvic acid
2-Nitrophenylpyruvic acid is a nitro compound that has been shown to react with Grignard reagents to form quinoline derivatives. 2-Nitrophenylpyruvic acid has also been shown to be an efficient method for the synthesis of amides from the corresponding nitroalkane and amine. It can be used as a chlorinating agent in the synthesis of anthranilic, chloride, and phenylhydrazone derivatives. Amide formation is an important step in the synthesis of many biologically active compounds such as tetracyclines, penicillins, and cephalosporins.
2-Nitrophenylpyruvic acid undergoes tautomeric shifts between its keto and enol forms, butyric acid is one of these products. Phosphorus pentachloride can be used to cleave this product into butyric acid and phenylhydrazone.
