1,6-Naphthyridine-2-carboxylic acid is a naphthyridine compound that has been shown to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is synthesized in human cells from the precursor 1,6-naphthyridine. 1,6-Naphthyridine-2-carboxylic acid is an amide and has hydrogen bonds with the carboxyl group of the molecule. The pharmacophore for this compound is a hydrogen bond acceptor and a hydrogen bond donor group. This compound has antiviral activity against influenza A virus and HIV by inhibiting viral RNA synthesis and protein synthesis respectively. This molecule also has anti-viral activity against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) by inhibiting DNA replication.
