4-Nitrophthalamide is a nitro compound that is soluble in water. It has a low molecular weight and is hydrophilic. 4-Nitrophthalamide also has photochemical properties, which can be used for deodorizing, as well as for disinfecting and sterilizing surfaces. Nitro compounds are toxic to microorganisms because of the oxygen atom in the nitro group. The phenoxy group in 4-nitrophthalamide makes it more effective than other nitro groups at binding to organic material, such as cyclic hydrocarbons, encapsulation, and optical properties. 4-Nitrophthalamide can be used in the treatment of tuberculosis by interfering with the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The amide structure of this drug inhibits bacterial growth by binding to RNA polymerase or DNA gyrase.
