Naphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid is a sulfonic acid that has been used as a precursor to caproic acid. This chemical can be synthesized by reacting anhydrous sodium sulfite with naphthalene in the presence of sulfuric acid. Naphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid is also formed during the conversion of polysulfides to sulfones and can be detected by chromatographic methods. Naphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid reacts with antibodies in a standard immunoassay to form an antigen that is detectable by chromatographic or immunological methods. This chemical has been shown to have anti-HIV activity and also has acute toxicities such as erythema and irritation on skin contact.
