1,4,5,8-Naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid (NTCA) is a carboxylic acid that is used as a starting material for the production of various chemicals. 1,4,5,8-Naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid has been shown to bind to metal ions in solution by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. 1,4,5,8-Naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid is oxidized by catalysts such as chromium oxide and manganese dioxide to yield oxidative products. The oxidation process can be monitored gravimetrically by measuring the weight change of the sample after heating it with alkaline potassium permanganate. Cyclohexane ring formation can be achieved through acylation reactions with ethylene diamine or other amines at elevated temperatures. Sample preparation can be done through analytical chemistry techniques such as titration and colorimetry.
