5-Nitro-2-(trifluoromethoxy)aniline is a nitrating agent that can be used as a catalyst. It has been used to synthesize sulfonic acid, which is an important type of organic compound. 5-Nitro-2-(trifluoromethoxy)aniline is also used in the synthesis of mesoporous silica gel. This agent has shown activity as a catalyst for the synthesis of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol and 2,4,6-dinitrophenol. The optimum reaction temperature for this catalyst is between 60°C and 130°C. 5-Nitro-2-(trifluoromethoxy)aniline is also catalytic in the synthesis of naphthalene from formaldehyde and phenylhydrazine. This process yields high yields of naphthalene with low amounts of byproducts.
