Neuromedin U is a peptide that has been found to have high binding affinity for 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)2 receptors. Neuromedin U is also able to activate locomotor activity in rats, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of mammalian carcinoma cells in culture. This peptide binds to the 5-HT2 receptor and inhibits adenylyl cyclase activity, leading to a decrease in intracellular levels of cAMP and cytosolic Ca2+. The physiological effects of neuromedin U are mediated through its ability to stimulate pluripotent cells in the brain, as well as its ability to inhibit energy metabolism. Neuromedin U has also been shown to bind to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers, suggesting it may be used as a probe for DNA sequencing or gene mapping.
