2-Naphthyl 2-diazo-3,3,3-trifluoropropionate is a hydrophobic chemical that is used as a fluorescent probe to study the structure of membranes and virus capsids. It binds specifically to c1-6 alkyl chains in the membrane bilayer and forms a long-lived fluorescent product. This compound is labeled with 2-(dialkylamino)naphthalene, which has been shown to be an effective antiviral agent. 2-Naphthyl 2-diazo-3,3,3-trifluoropropionate can also be used for the detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in cells and tissues. The compound is active against HCV at concentrations much lower than those required for other nucleic acid probes.
