trans-2-Octenoic acid ethyl ester is a marker of fatty acids. It is an ester of trans-2-octenoic acid and ethanol. The population of this diastereomer has been shown to be present in the human body at high levels, especially in the blood and adipose tissue. Trans-2-octenoic acid ethyl ester is a component of aldehydes that are produced by the oxidation of linoleic acid or oleic acid. Trans-2-Octenoic acid ethyl ester is also a marker for infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis or malaria. This fatty acid can be used to study antibiotics profiles because it is active against bacteria like methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
