Opiorphin is a peptide that is a potential biomarker for bowel disease. It has been shown to have an effect on locomotor activity in vitro and can be used as a potential treatment for infectious diseases. Opiorphin binds to the active site of the enzyme inhibitor, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), which is associated with digestive diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Opiorphin inhibits the MMP-9 enzyme, preventing it from degrading collagen in the bowel wall. This leads to increased tissue repair and reduced inflammation. Opiorphin also has antimicrobial properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit bacterial growth through inhibition of protein synthesis. Opiorphin has also been shown to reduce inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNFα in mice with autoimmune diseases.
