3-(2-Oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)propanoic acid is the major active metabolite of putreanine, a toxic alkaloid found in the plant species Lophophora williamsii. 3-(2-Oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)propanoic acid has been shown to have both nervous system and organ toxicity in animal studies. It is a nonpolar compound that can be detected by gas chromatography using an electron capture detector (GC/ECD). The radioactive form of 3-(2-Oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)propanoic acid can be synthesized by reaction with sodium deuteride.
