2-Oxo-4-phenylbutanoic acid (2OPB) is an enzyme inhibitor that is a competitive inhibitor of glutamate dehydrogenase. It binds to the dinucleotide phosphate binding site on the enzyme and shuts down the production of amino acids, leading to cell death. 2OPB has been shown to inhibit aminotransferase activity in corynebacterium glutamicum. This inhibition may be due to the hydroxyl group of 2OPB binding to a surface methionine residue on the enzyme, which decreases its reactivity with ammonia. 2OPB also inhibits glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase, which are enzymes that catalyze reactions with nitrogen atoms. These enzymes produce nitrogenous waste products that can be toxic to cells. 2OPB has been shown to have antibacterial activity against a number of bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Bacillus subtil
