Description

4-Octylbenzene-1,3-diol is a compound that has been extracted from the bark of Phellodendron amurense. The extract has been used in traditional Asian medicine and more recently as a sunscreen ingredient. It is thought to stabilize the structure of the skin and prevent sunburn. 4-Octylbenzene-1,3-diol is also present in chicory and may have a role in preventing symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. Clinical studies have shown that 4-octylbenzene-1,3-diol can prevent UVB induced erythema and sunburn cells in mice. This compound also has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation.
