Octahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole is an allosteric modulator that binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. It is synthesized from diethyl succinate and piperazine. Octahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole has been shown to inhibit HIV infection in cell culture assays by binding to the CCR5 receptor and blocking the chemokine binding site. Octahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole also inhibits chemotaxis of neutrophils and macrophages, which are cells involved in the immune system. This compound is also a potent inhibitor of sodium sulfide activity and may be used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.
