Octylboronic acid is an organic compound that contains nitrogen and boron. It is a functional group with three hydrocarbon chains and one boron atom. Octylboronic acid has been shown to inhibit cholesterol esterase, which is a pancreatic enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of cholesterol esters in the intestine. This property makes it useful as a detergent composition for cleaning mammalian tissue, such as surgical instruments. Octylboronic acid also has been shown to bind to the substrate, which is necessary for inhibition of the enzyme activity. The trimerization of octylboronic acid leads to its protonation on the aromatic ring, which may be important in binding to the enzyme. The alkynyl group on its structure allows it to form an adduct with hydroxide ion in basic solution, making it possible for octylboronic acid to act as an alkyne-based catalyst for organic reactions.
