5-Oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-carboxylicacid (5OHT) is a remedy for disorders of the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. It has been shown to be selective for inhibition of thromboxane A2 production in the rat heart. 5OHT is also a potent inhibitor of PGE2 synthesis from arachidonic acid by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity. 5OHT is used in catalytic reduction reactions to convert organometallic compounds into alcohols and carboxylic acids. The mechanism of this catalytic reaction involves conversion of the organometallic compound to an ethyl ester, followed by acid ethyl ester hydrolysis.
