(R)-(-)-5-Oxotetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid is a synthetic drug that inhibits mitochondrial respiration. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against MRSA and tuberculosis. This compound can be used as a cancer chemotherapeutic agent. (R)-(-)-5-Oxotetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid binds to the active site of the enzyme dehydrogenase in mitochondria, thereby inhibiting the synthesis of ATP and causing cell death by apoptosis. The drug also has an effect on tumor cells, which is related to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial respiration and cause cancer cell death. This compound is synthesized from two commercially available starting materials: chloroform and magnesium metal powder.
