Mitiglinide is a drug that belongs to the class of thiazolidinediones. It is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in combination with metformin, and as monotherapy in patients with type 1 diabetes. Mitiglinide binds to the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and activates it, leading to increased uptake of glucose by muscle cells and adipose tissue. It also increases insulin secretion and improves insulin sensitivity. The drug has been shown to decrease fasting blood glucose levels and HbA1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Mitiglinide is available as an oral tablet or capsule containing either 100 mg or 200 mg of the active ingredient.
Mitiglinide calcium contains the calcium salt of mitiglinide, which can be used for patients who are unable to tolerate the acidity of mitiglinide hydrochloride due to renal failure or other gastrointestinal conditions.
