The synthesis of 4-oxazolemethanol has been accomplished by a novel methodology involving the stereoselective addition of ethylmagnesium bromide to 2-methylpyridinium iodide and subsequent hydrolysis. The yields from this process are high, making it a good candidate for biomolecular chemistry.
