Ornithine is a non-essential amino acid that is synthesized from glutamate and ammonia. It is an important intermediate in the urea cycle and can also be used to synthesize polyamines. Ornithine has been shown to have antioxidant properties and can be used as a dietary supplement. Ornithine has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and may be of use for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, where it has been shown to reduce joint inflammation by suppressing the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Ornithine's biological properties are largely due to its ability to regulate intracellular levels of calcium through its action on the ion channels. This amino acid has also been shown to prevent oxidative injury by increasing glutathione synthesis.
