Octabromodiphenyl ether is a chemical with the molecular formula CHBrO that is used as an analytical method for detecting hydroxyl groups in biological samples. It is also used as a sample preparation reagent for determining the presence of hydroxyl groups in human serum. Octabromodiphenyl ether has been shown to react with adrenocortical carcinoma cells. This reaction may be due to its ability to modulate signal pathways and inhibit granule neurons from releasing neurotransmitters, which leads to cell death. Octabromodiphenyl ether is not stable under conditions of high temperature and/or pH, but it can be debrominated by methyl ethyl ketone under these conditions. The uptake of octabromodiphenyl ether into fatty acids has also been studied.
