2-Octanone is a chiral compound that has been synthesized in an asymmetric synthesis. It has a phase transition temperature of -81°C, and is a member of the methyl ketones group. 2-Octanone can be found in natural products such as soybean lipoxygenase, where it serves as a substrate for the enzyme to produce an allenic oxide. 2-Octanone also has significant interactions with biological properties, including the trigeminal nerve, which senses pain. This compound's chemical reactions have been shown to include hydrolysis reactions with the addition of hydrochloric acid to form caproic acid and water; transfer reactions between phenyl ethers and diphenyl ethers with hydrogen chloride; and condensation reactions with methyl ethyl ketones.
