Oxyfedrine is a non-selective enzyme inhibitor that inhibits protein synthesis in the heart. It has been shown to inhibit cardiac enzymes, such as papillary muscle, and to have potential as a biomarker for infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases. Oxyfedrine also causes cardiac effects such as congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, or cardiogenic shock. The drug is used orally and can be administered intravenously. Oxyfedrine may be used to treat chronic oral infections with anaerobic bacteria caused by pyrazole-containing organisms. Sodium citrate is often co-administered with oxyfedrine because it prevents renal toxicity due to the accumulation of citric acid in the blood stream.
