Octadecylsuccinic anhydride (ODSA) is a polyfunctional aliphatic hydrocarbon that has been used to treat cancer. It is a chemotherapeutic agent that is effective in treating malignant tumors. ODSA binds to the fatty acid chains of the cell membrane, which leads to a decrease in the viscosity of the cells. This disruption of the cell membrane causes an increase in calcium ions, leading to a breakdown of the cancerous cells. The molecule also induces apoptosis by binding to DNA and inhibiting its synthesis. ODSA can be used as an emulsifier and stabilizer for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It also has transport properties, which allow it to travel through skin layers without damaging them. ODSA can be synthesized from chlorine atoms, fatty acids, hydroxyl groups, alcohol groups, and hydroxy groups.
